Intentions, planning, and self-efficacy predict physical activity in Chinese and Polish adolescents: Two moderated mediation analyses1

چکیده
Planning is assumed to translate intentions into health behaviors. However, this may fail due to a lack of perceived self-efficacy. People do not tackle challenging tasks if they harbor self-doubts, even if they have made a good action plan. The present two descriptive longitudinal studies are designed to examine the putative moderating role of self-efficacy in the planning-behavior relationship. In Study I (N = 534 Chinese adolescents), intentions were assessed at baseline, whereas planning, self-efficacy, and physical activity were measured four weeks later. In Study II, 620 Polish adolescents filled out questionnaires assessing physical activity, intentions, planning, and selfefficacy with a 10-week follow-up assessment of physical activity. A moderated mediation model was examined. Planning was specified as a mediator between intentions and behavior, whereas self-efficacy was specified as a moderator of the planningbehavior relationship. Results confirm that levels of self-efficacy moderate the mediation process. The strength of the mediated effect (intention via planning on behavior) increased along with levels of self-efficacy. These results remained valid after accounting for baseline physical activity. For planning to mediate the intention-behavior relation, adolescents must have sufficiently high levels of self-efficacy. Otherwise, planning 1 The preparation of this paper was partially supported by Grant N106 036 32/2487 (Scientific Funds in years 2007-10) from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Poland. 2 Correspondence: Trauma, Health, & Hazards Center. Self-Efficacy and Planning Predict Dietary Behaviors in Costa Rican and South Korean Women: Two Moderated Mediation Analyses
Dietary planning is supposed to mediate between intentions and dietary behaviors. However, if a person lacks self-efficacy, this mediation might fail. A cross-sectional study in Costa Rica and a longitudinal study in South Korea were designed to examine the moderating role of self-efficacy in the intention– planning–behavior relationship. Intentions, planning, self-efficacy, dietary behaviors, ...
متن کاملSelf-efficacy moderates the mediation of intentions into behavior via plans.
OBJECTIVE To examine the putative moderating role of self-efficacy in the intention-planning-behavior relationship. METHODS In N=812 individuals, intentions (independent variable) were assessed at baseline, whereas action plans (mediator), self-efficacy (moderator), and physical activity (dependent variable) were measured again 4 weeks later. We examined a moderated-mediation model. RESULTS...
متن کاملThe Importance of Autonomous Regulation for Students' Successful Translation of Intentions into Behavior Change via Planning
Physical activity has a high prevention potential in adolescents. This study investigated the relations between physical activity and intention, autonomous regulation, and planning. We hypothesized that planning mediates the relationship between intention and behavior and that this mediation should depend on the level of autonomous regulation. Stratified randomization sampling method was admini...
متن کاملSynergistic effects of planning and self-efficacy on physical activity.
Many individuals are motivated to improve their physical activity levels but often fail to act on their good intention. This study examines the roles of planning and self-efficacy in the prediction of physical activity. A total of 290 participants (77% women, mean age = 41.9 years) were surveyed three times. Intentions, planning, and physical activity were specified as a mediator chain. Results...
متن کاملDisentangling the relation between intentions, planning, and behaviour: a moderated mediation analysis.
Action planning is assumed to mediate between intentions and health behaviours. Moreover, intentions are assumed to moderate the planning-behaviour relation, because people with high intentions are more likely to enact their plans. The present studies extend these suppositions by integrating both assumptions to a novel and parsimonious model of moderated mediation: the mediation effect is hypot...
